Drew Brees is welcomed as the keynote speaker for the 2010 Paramedic Luncheon

    May 20, 2010

Reflecting on the New Orleans Saints' Super Bowl victory as a "special moment that connects us all for life," quarterback Drew Brees provided the keynote address for Acadian Ambulance's Paramedic Luncheon on Thursday in Lafayette, La.

The MVP of Super Bowl XLIV was greeted with a minute-long standing ovation by the more than 1,600 people attending the annual luncheon, which honors Acadian's top paramedic of the year.

"We could feel that there was a piece of everyone across the country that wanted us to win that game because they knew how much it meant to the people here, and everything that ... the entire Gulf Coast region had been through throughout Hurricane Katrina and other natural disasters," Brees said.

He paid tribute to Acadian's efforts during that time. "Your work during hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Gustav and Ike, all the help you provided for many, many years, is something that I can tell you none of us take for granted," he said. "Acadian was a mainstay."

In turn, Richard Zuschlag, Acadian's chairman and CEO, acknowledged how much Brees cares about Louisiana. "Oh, and by the way," he added, "thank you for winning the Super Bowl, 31-17."

Brees said his move to New Orleans in 2006 and the work he has done in the aftermath of Katrina felt like a calling. "You feel that calling, too," he said. "You truly make a difference. You save lives. Our calling is to continue that work. I am inspired by you, and it makes me want to be a better person. Thank you for inspiring me."

Brees was introduced by Louisiana's new lieutenant governor, Scott Angelle, who thanked the Saints' quarterback for leading the state out of "43 years in football purgatory." Archbishop Gregory Aymond of the Archdiocese of New Orleans provided the invocation and benediction.

Eddie Domingue of Houma was honored as the company's Paramedic of the Year. Domingue has worked for Acadian for 12 years.

Thanking his colleagues, Domingue said, "My past and present partners ... have given me the tools to become a caring and positive person. It was your encouragement and belief in me that gave me the strength to not only become a paramedic, but to challenge myself every day as a person. I am proud, humbled and honored to be a part of this team."
